Not Just For Humans, Anymore!

Last month, I put together an abundance spell. Admittedly, it wasn't my best work. Between balancing my home life and work life, I was in a massive pickle for timing it with the New Moon. Abundance spells weren't previously my forte, and I thought I did everything right. I was SO wrong.

As I was anointing and lighting my candles, I started to hear a crackle.

"Wow," I thought, pleased with myself. "These candles are fucking jumping tonight!"

It didn't take too long before I realized that my hair was on fire. Like, half of my head. I calmly put it out and laughed it off for the rest of the ritual (I wasn't about to break the circle, too!). That night, while tending to my mangled tresses, I reflected on what had gone wrong! I burned my dollar bill, I honored the corners, there were even a few drops of blood in the incense I had hand-ground. WHAT DID I DO WRONG!? After the smallest amount of deliberation, it struck me: I didn't make a balanced sacrifice!

Now, when I say "sacrifice", I don't mean what you think I mean. It's more of an exchange. Think back on your life for a second on all the things you've accomplished or gained. Go on! Take a few minutes...

Now think of all the things that you had to give up in order to make the space for those things to happen...

Plain and simple, the universe (or whatever it is you ascribe to) simply doesn't give without taking. You cannot have gain without loss. As above, so below and all that jazz. So what we're going to talk about is learning what it is you need to let go of in order to make space for the things you need or want.

I did another abundance spell. This time, I offered quite a bit more. My sacrifices came from my garden. I kept that offering bowl FULL of my most beautiful flowers and surrounded it with live cuttings, herbs, incense, and crystals. I put every dollar of cash I had earned, spent time honoring what needed to be honored, and manifested the shit out of my intent. And you know what? It worked. Not only for me, but for all my friends who were there to participate.

Sometimes, however, a sacrifice isn't exactly the physical kind. Quite in fact, more often than not, it's more emotional. You might be craving a new way of life that doesn't involve another person. Or maybe you want freedom from past life trauma that haunts you and pushes people away. Or perhaps you just want more money! All of these things require two things: sacrifice and space.

Easier said than done, I'm afraid; but it doesn't change the fact that it's true. And when working with the universe, it's inevitable. So you're better off just getting it out of the way before it claims something you didn't foresee. (That first ritual I talked about? It took my hair, scratched my cornea, and covered me in chiggers and poison ivy from head to toe. The outcome was... Just okay.)

In my first blog, we talked about how there is no one way to access spirituality. Well, that's still true! But it gets a little more involved when you're doing spellwork and ritual. What works for some, might not work for you. Part of your journey is finding what works! Most of journey, really. The point is, if you want something to manifest, you need to be able to offer up an equal sacrifice; and that's usually something you think you're not ready for.

"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." - Newton's Third Law of Physics

"That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing." - Hermes: The Emerald Tablet

So whatever your practice may be, it should be regarded as a universal law that sacrifice is necessary in spellwork. The more accustomed you get to this very intimate, painful process, the easier it is to let go of that which no longer serves you. When done correctly, you'll have accessed one of the truths of how the universe works. When done often, you'll see the karmic cycles of your subconscious. And when done mindfully, you'll find yourself living a life that far surpasses anything you could have ever dreamed.

It's the Black Moon, the end of Mercury Retrograde, and the beginning of my favorite season (Leo Season!). So, go! Dump the ones holding you back. Burn up all your cigarettes in a bonfire. Cut down your prettiest flowers and offer them up to all the sky wizards in exchange for something more! Just remember to offer it up before asking, and always keep your hair tied back around fire.
